Tseung Kwan O New TV City Ground Breaking Ceremony

8 March 2000

Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) has signed a lease agreement with The Hong Kong Industrial Estates Corporation (HKIEC) for a site in the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate in May 1999. After over 10 months' site investigation work, a Ground Breaking Ceremony was held yesterday (8 March 2000) to mark the commencement of construction.

Sir Run Run Shaw, Executive Chairman of Television Broadcasts Limited, Mr Peter Y F Lo, Chief Executive of The Hong Kong Industrial Estates Corporation (HKIEC) and Mr K L Chan, Managing Director of Hip Hing Construction Company Limited officiated at the ceremony. Also attending the ceremony were Ms Mona Fong, Director, Television Broadcasts Limited; Messrs Louis Page, Managing Director, Television Broadcasts Limited; T K Ho, General Manager - Television Broadcasting; Raymond Wong, Assistant General Manager - Television Broadcasting; S K Cheong, Assistant General Manager - Television Broadcasting; Bernard Cheung, Deputy General Manager - International Operations and other senior executives as well as Miss Hong Kong 1999 Titleholders and artistes.

The new site is located at Sections K, M, and V of Tseung Kwan O Town, Lot No.39. With an area of about 9 hectares (89,516 square metres), the site is the largest piece of land ever leased by HKIEC. It is also the first land leased for use by a service industry company in an industrial estate. The lease meets the new selection criteria approved by the Chief Executive in Council in May 1998. After the completion in 2003 of a new, state-of-the-art HK$1.6 billion facility on the new site, TVB will relocate its headquarters and principal facilities there from the present location, known as TV City, on Clearwater Bay Road, Kowloon.

The relocation is necessary to update existing facilities and because the existing lease at TV City will expire in December 2003. The Ceremony also revealed the layout plan of the New TV City which includes various purpose-built blocks such as the Satellite Farm, Technical Block, Drama Studio Block, Live Studio Block, News / Carpark Block, Administration Tower, Workshop Building and the Outdoor Shooting Site (layout plan enclosed). Construction work will first start with the 3-storey Technical Block where the Master Control Centre and the Editing Suites will be located. The Administration Tower with 7 storeys and usable floor area of about 14,700 sq metre will be located above the Technical Block.

It is envisaged that the new TV City will not only support TVB's continued future development and requirements but will also enable TVB to increase its production of high quality television programmes and provide state-of-the-art television broadcasting and production technology. This new headquarters will enable the Company to compete in the increasingly competitive television industry in Hong Kong and overseas, allow sufficient room for future expansion and thus play a pivotal role in making Hong Kong as an important regional broadcasting hub.
